Woven Stories

Antique Oriental rugs were woven on a traditional loom with strands of wool, called warps, stretched vertically between two wooden horizontal beams. The weaver then passes wefts, in alternation over and under each adjacent warp.

The warp and the weft constitute the basic foundation of most carpets. The weaver then repeatedly introduces rows of looped ‘knots’ in between several wefts that are then uniformly clipped to produce the pile.

The higher the number of knots the finer the rug will be, and the more intricate the pattern will become. This technique originally proved so effective that carpets are still being made using these same methods today.

Most carpets and rugs are classified by the surroundings in which they were woven — whether hand-woven upon the small loom of a nomadic tribe, part of a cottage industry within a local village, or produced in a professional or royal workshop within a city.

This rug from our Khal Collection is a stunner: handwoven by Northern Afghans, it starts out with a delicate border, it is geometric with burnt orange, dark navy, dark red, lightly khaki and red accent colors that are carefully hand dyed.

Our Khal rugs' designs are a reflection of distinct histories and traditions. Rooted in deep symbolism, the thick borders circling the rectangular shape of the rug signify safe keeping, and the classic elephants foot print symbolizes a lover's wish for their traveling partners step to be as strong as an elephant on their travels.

This luxury rug is made out of 100% pure wool, making the rug natural and extremely hard-wearing that also has dirt-repellent and heat-insulating properties.

The khal rug's wool is incomparably soft and has a natural shine, that only gets better with age and use.

Sourced directly from the weaver, this is a fair trade, handwoven rug that is organically dyed and made out of pure lambs wool.
