Design Story
Founded in 1935 in Helsinki by Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, and their collaborators, Artek was created to promote a new vision of modern living. The company’s name itself combined “art” and “technology,” reflecting its ambition to merge human centered design with industrial production.
At a time when much of modernism felt cold and mechanical, Alvar Aalto introduced softer organic forms inspired by nature and the Finnish landscape. His bent wood furniture became revolutionary, particularly pieces like the Stool 60, which used innovative laminated birch techniques to create elegant curves with remarkable structural simplicity.
Rather than focusing on decoration, Artek embraced clarity, functionality, and material honesty. Birch wood, natural light, and balanced proportions became central elements of its aesthetic, helping define what the world would later recognize as Scandinavian design.
Over the decades, Artek furniture became closely associated with architecture, creative culture, and minimalist interiors around the world. Its pieces feel timeless because they were never designed around trends, but around everyday life and enduring usability.
Today, Artek remains one of the most respected names in modern furniture, continuing the legacy of Alvar and Aino Aalto through designs that feel as contemporary now as they did nearly a century ago.
