A Pair of Louis XVI Style Giltwood Fauteuils
French, Late 19th Century
Each with a rectangular padded back surmounted by a carved cresting of foliate and floral spray centred by a basket of flowers, the corners headed by carved patera finials, the back rail carved with a continuous bead-and-reel border, the outcurved padded armrests on acanthus-carved supports above a bowed seat rail enriched with further acanthus and floral carving, raised on four circular tapering fluted legs headed by foliate collars and terminating in toupie feet; upholstered throughout in a later ivory silk damask woven with a polychrome design of flowering branches and cornflowers in tones of rose, sage, and slate blue.
The form closely following the canonical fauteuil à la reine as codified by the great Parisian menuisiers of the reign of Louis XVI, among them Georges Jacob and Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené, whose workshops supplied the royal garde-meuble with suites of seat furniture of precisely this type. The quality of carving to the present examples — particularly the acanthus-wrapped arm supports and the richly worked seat rail — is consistent with the output of the better Parisian ébénistes working in the Louis XVI revival manner during the Third Republic period, when historical accuracy and technical refinement were equally prized by a prosperous bourgeois clientele.
