About this piece
This Ming Dynasty Cizhou ceramic planter is a centuries-old artifact of Chinese craftsmanship, originally created for storing wine, vinegar, or soy in Northern China's renowned kilns. Its hand-painted surface carries profound symbolic meaning: the phrase 连年有余 (lián nián yǒu yú)—"May you have abundance year after year"—is cleverly completed by a painted fish, a visual pun where the character for "fish" (鱼, yú) mirrors the sound of "surplus" (余, yú), embodying the Chinese tradition of layered artistic and linguistic wordplay.
With over 280 years of patina, this vessel transcends its utilitarian origins. Today it commands attention as a sculptural statement piece—equally striking as an oversized floor planter, dried floral display, or layered styling object in living rooms, entryways, and sheltered outdoor spaces. Its organic texture and understated glazing make it a contemplative anchor for curated interiors.
A tangible fragment of domestic history, prized equally by peasants and scholars for its durability and subtle beauty.
