TITLE OF THE WORK: 'Living Jila'

ARTIST: Mawukura Jimmy Nerrimah 1924-2013, Wlamadjari language (Great Sandy Desert, WA.)

DESCRIPTION: Nerrimah was represented by Mangkaja Arts, Fitzroy Crossing and was one of the most senior and important figures in that community. Before this time, Mawukurra was a senior and traditional lawman who lived on his country until the 1960s. He returned to the places depicted in his paintings often staying for extended periods of time to fulfill custodian responsibilities. These places he described as 'living' Jila (waterholes).

Published by Murrundoo Print Studio, Fremantle WA. in the late 1990's these three prints by the Wlmatjatjarri painter Jimmy Nerrimah are being offered for sale for the first time in over 25 years having sold out by the end of the 1990's.

His works are characterised by a powerful iconography and expressive 'elastic' line with a bright color palette.

CURATOR'S NOTE:  Nerrimah's works are held in the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. His works are held in the collections of Sir James and Lady Cruthers, Artbank, Westfarmers Ltd., Ian & Sue Bernadt, Levy Kaplan Collection (Seattle) USA, Thomas Vroom Collection (Amsterdam), and private collections in Germany, UK and Australia.  Neil Murphy.
