Born in Hobart in 1914, Max Rupert Angus is a landscape and portrait painter, illustrator and commercial artist. Following graphic design studies in Melbourne between 1938 - 41, and a period in the army, Angus returned to Tasmania and gained a fine arts diploma in 1950. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1978 and elected a Fellow of the royal Society of Arts (London) in 1988. A prolific artist, Angus recently opened an exhibition of his landscape paintings the day after his 100 birthday.
This poster was commissioned by the Tasmanian Government Tourist Bureau in 1952, wishing to publicise the tourist delights of northern Tasmania. Angus has faithfully illustrated the beauty of Cataract Gorge, Launceston - the Gorge Bridge in the middle ground with the towering cliffs beyond.
