Designed by Tamara Aladin for the Riihimäki glassworks, the Rulla model exemplifies the bold, graphic forms that defined Finnish glass design of the late modernist period. Aladin, one of the 20th centuries leading female glass designers, worked for Riihimäen Lasi from 1959 to 1976, created a number of striking vase models that combined simple geometric silhouettes with strong sculptural presence, many of which have become icons of Scandinavian mid-century design.
The Rulla vase, introduced in the early 1970s, is distinguished by its thick-walled cylindrical body, rolled rim and flared base, creating a balanced architectural form. Even in clear glass, the heavy construction produces striking optical distortion and light refraction through the walls of the vase, emphasising the purity of form that characterised Nordic glass design of the period.

Riihimäen Lasi was one of Finland’s most significant glass manufacturers of the twentieth century, operating from 1910 until 1990 and employing several influential designers including Tamara Aladin, Helena Tynell and Erkkitapio Siiroinen.
