About this piece
This is a gorgeous, authentic matched set of five wheel-thrown stoneware bowls by Australian studio pottery pioneer Harold Hughan (1893–1987). Each piece features the impressed "HGI" (Hughan Glen Iris) studio seal on the base. A dark iron-rich tenmoku glaze is seen internally extending over to the outter body where a deliberately placed hand-painted iron stripe separates the glaze from the textured stoneware clay below.
These are beatifully crafted, well weighted and lovely to hold. Ideal for display or table use. Highly collectable, these bowls are such a wonderful and unique piece of Australian pottery history to behold!
About the artist:
Self taught and originally a mechanical engineer by trade, Harold Hughan made his own potter's wheel in his late forties, in the early 1940s. Operating from his backyard shed in Melbourne’s Glen Iris, he held his landmark first solo exhibition at Georges Gallery in 1950, entered major museum collections including the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and Victoria and Albert Museum, and was the subject of NGV retrospectives in 1969 and 1983. "He is one of the founders of Australian studio pottery; his work remains one of the foundation stones of Australian art and craft and a living touchstone of quality." - NGV website.
