While the Anglepoise is globally recognised as a British design icon, this rare 4-spring Model 1209 carries a uniquely Australian provenance. Produced under license by Reynolds Engineering in Melbourne, this lamp is a significant artifact from Victoria’s post-war manufacturing boom, an era when local engineering firms were trusted to replicate the world’s most precise designs to exacting standards.
The Anglepoise was born from the mind of George Carwardine, an automotive suspension engineer. In 1932, he developed a spring that could be moved easily but would remain perfectly rigid when released.
The Model 1209 was the rugged, industrial predecessor to the domestic 1227. It was designed for the heavy-duty environments of the 1930s and 40s, used by the RAAF, maritime navigators, and architects. Its defining feature is the four-spring mechanism, which offers a superior reach and a heavy mechanical feel that later domestic models lack.
Melbourne Provenance
In the mid-20th century, import tariffs meant that for an Australian to own an Anglepoise, it had to be made here. Reynolds Engineering, operating out of Melbourne's industrial heartland, became the local custodian of Carwardine’s patent.
These Melbourne-made versions are distinguished by their incredibly heavy cast-iron bases and a level of durability intended for the working Australian office. To find a 1209 with the original Reynolds Engineering stamp is to find a piece of local history that bridged the gap between British innovation and Australian craft.
The 4-Spring vs. 3-Spring Distinction
For the discerning collector, the Model 1209 is the definitive choice. While the 3-spring Model 1227 (released in 1938) was designed for the domestic market and general home use, the 4-spring 1209 remained the gold standard for industrial and professional applications.
The additional spring isn’t just aesthetic; it allows for a more complex distribution of tension, providing a significantly longer reach and a smoother, more balanced movement. Because these were more expensive to produce and were generally sold to government departments, architectural firms, and engineering workshops, they were produced in much smaller quantities than the domestic models. Finding a 4-spring version today, especially one with the unique Melbourne provenance is becoming increasingly rare.

This lamp has been restored to be a daily-use functional object while honouring its past.
We have intentionally preserved the original patina and authentic surface wear on the black finish. These marks are the fingerprints of its history, giving the lamp a depth that no modern reproduction can match.
