This set of six mid century modern chairs is a pre-order restoration. We restore your chairs to order and upholster them in the fabric you choose. The photos show the standard of the finished restoration. A full set of six is harder to find than a set of four, and it suits a larger dining table.
Choose a fabric or vinyl from a range of suppliers, including Zepel, Mokum, Warwick and Sustainable Living Fabrics. A wool or a textured weave gives the set a soft, warm look, and a wipe clean vinyl suits a busy family table. Allow about three weeks for the work. Leather is available at an extra cost. Tony Parker came home to Sydney in 1953 after studying industrial design and working at John Lewis in London, and he brought a new idea for Australian dining rooms: Scandinavian modernism, made locally. Inspired by the solid timber and soft organic forms of Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen, he took over the direction of his father's company, which Jack Parker had started in Sydney in 1935 making kitchen furniture, and turned it into one of the most recognised furniture brands in the country.
Parker's first modern range was shown at a Sydney furniture exhibition and produced orders that took months to fill. The early pieces were made in Queensland maple and coachwood, and the company later moved to teak from Burma and Thailand. By the 1960s the factory at Regents Park was building Parker furniture by the thousand, and chairs like this Model 97 found their way into dining rooms across Australia. Tony Parker's aim was furniture that is well designed and well made, to last a lifetime, and a restored 97 shows why so many of them are still in use.
The teak frames are restored and finished in Oli-Natura hardwax oil, which brings out the grain and leaves a matte surface that is easy to maintain. The seats are rebuilt with new foam and webbing, then upholstered to your choice.
Dimensions: 79 cm H x 49 cm W x 49 cm D, with a seat height of 46 cm. The 46 cm seat height suits a standard dining table, and a set of six is the natural match for a rectangular table that seats six. Sold as a set of six.
