This remarkable pair of Spode pierced chestnut baskets with their under-plates date to the Regency period and were crafted in Stoke-on-Trent. The under-plates have a pierced rim and an almost geometric brown and green hand enamelled border, which is thought to be pattern 3037, marked to the underside of the pieces. The matched baskets have the same piercing and enamelled decoration plus lovely naturalistic faux branch handles. The pair likely date to circa 1820, with pattern 2947 introduced in 1819 indicating pattern 3037 was in the couple of years that followed, and were manufactured in Spode's Stoke-on-Trent factory. We can confidently say the pair were manufactured prior to 1833 when Spode's ownership changed along with their marking process. Incredibly the pair have remained together in their 200 year life and present in good antique condition. There is minor fine crazing throughout all four of the pieces and some minor staining in areas, commensurate with age and use. To the underside of one under-plate there is a small glaze chip, and one of the under-plates appears to have had a section repainted, evidenced in a slight difference in colour along with it showing up under a UV light (see image five). All in all, a really beautiful example of Regency period Spode which have remained a pair for over 200 years!
