Italian pedestal side table from the postwar period, circa 1950s. Produced in workshops that sustained the tradition of carved and gilded timber through the mid century while adapting classical Baroque forms to a domestic scale.
The pedestal base is densely carved with acanthus scrolls, reeded pilaster panels and diamond lattice, resolving into a shaped platform base with bracket feet. The whole is finished in two tone gilt and silver leaf.
The leaf has softened and thinned unevenly over time, revealing timber in places. This patina is not damage; it is the record of the piece, and the irregular light it catches across the surface is not replicable with new gilding. The worn gilt reads as deliberate rather than neglected. A glass top protects the gilded rim without interrupting the base.
