Os Du Mutton Oak Ottoman Upholstered in Scalamandre Tiger Silk Velvet
The rectangular stuffed-over seat upholstered in a coral and ebony cut-velvet tiger-stripe fabric of bold graphic character; supported on four os de mouton — mutton-bone — legs of characteristic double-serpentine profile in stained walnut, united by a conforming shaped cross-stretcher of sinuous undulating form meeting at a central carved boss, the whole raised on scrolled pad feet.

The os de mouton leg form, with its distinctive double-curved profile suggestive of an elongated bone, is the defining structural motif of the Louis XIII style and enjoyed sustained popularity in France from the mid-17th century through successive revivals in the 19th century. The present tabouret, with its well-carved serpentine stretchers and robust proportions, reflects the quality of the ébénistes working in the Louis XIII revival tradition during the Second Empire and Third Republic periods.
The later upholstery, in a coral-ground cut-velvet à tigre, adds considerable decorative vitality to the piece and situates it firmly within the tradition of bold animal-print furnishings popularised in the 20th century by decorators such as Madeleine Castaing and, most famously, codified in the iconic Scalamandré Le Tigre fabric.
