About this piece
Hand-turned Kauri timber with an architectural wrapped-metal handle. Features rare original manufacturer's authenticity stamp on base.
This exceptional serving platter exemplifies the organic modernism of mid-century Australian design. Crafted by the renowned Melbourne workshop Cherny, the piece is turned from a singular piece of Queensland Kauri—a prized native conifer celebrated for its exceptionally fine grain and deep, honey-gold lustre.
The design masterfully balances the warmth of the expansive timber basin against the geometric tension of its central, arched handle. Wrapped in rhythmic black and tan cane, the structural metallic arc transforms a utilitarian household object into a striking piece of functional sculpture.
Restored with organic, food-safe oils to preserve the original timber patina.
Maker & Material History
Manufacturer: Cherny was a mid-20th-century Australian manufacturer known for producing turned and shaped wooden household goods, kitchenware, and specialty serving trays.
Timber: The platter is crafted from Kauri timber. This native softwood is highly valued for its fine, even texture, straight grain, and a beautifully warm, light-amber finish that darkens with age.
Care History: The vintage label notes it is "stain resistant" and advises to "wipe clean with a damp cloth, dry thoroughly," and to "oil occasionally" to preserve the timber's integrity.
Items like this from Cherny are highly collectible examples of mid-century Australian woodwork.
