About this piece

The centre of this majolica glazed low comport is decorated with a single sunflower, framed by foliage and resting on a woven basket weave edge. The sunflower was one of the main design motifs of the Aesthetic movement. This comport would have originally been part of a dessert service. It is unmarked, and attributed to Thomas Forester of Longton in Staffordshire. It measures 245 mm (9.75 inches) in diameter, and stands 58 mm (2.25 inches) high. It is in very good condition, with some slight crazing to the white glaze in the centre. It would date from around 1885.
