British painter, illustrator and designer Barnett Freedman (1901 - 1958) is today remembered for his innovative technique in early colour auto-lithography. At both Curwen and Bayard Press he lithographed around 40 book jackets and numerous posters - designing for Shell, the BBC and the General Post Office. He was an employee of the London Underground from 1935 - 56.

This piece is half of a 'pair poster', a format standardised in the 1940s by Christian Barman, the Publicity Officer at London Transport. This innovative approach saw an image designed in two poster halves, one for image and one for text, that work equally well when together or apart.
