When I think of antiquities, ‘vivid colour’ isn’t usually a term that springs to mind. Time and the sun usually play their part in softening the pallet. But sometimes, you find an exception to the rule. Like this 300 year old tapestry that has clearly been kept in the proverbial ‘good room’ with the curtains drawn. Now we get to see colour almost as fresh as the day it was made. Today my friends, we taste the oyster, not the broth.
Stunningly vivid late 17th early 18th century Aubusson tapestry. Strong Verdure themes with a scene depicting David and Bathsheba, the bible’s original thirst trap. An unusually large amount of silk was used in its manufacture, playing a large part in that shine.
Made by candle light over 300 years ago, it’s some of the best of what France has to offer.
Excellent colours, freshly cleaned and in good condition. Strong linen backing for support. Can be hung with velco or on a pole.
Sourced in Paris.
