Karim Rashid designed the Spin bowl for Georg Jensen in 2006, and this example is marked Georg Jensen Denmark on the base. It is formed in polished stainless steel as three soft lobes that turn around a raised centre, set on a short cylindrical foot.
Rashid, the New York based industrial designer, is known for fluid, organic forms, and Spin brings that approach to the Copenhagen silversmith that Georg Jensen founded in 1904. An example of this bowl is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. Stainless steel gives the sculptural presence of the house's silver hollowware without the tarnish.
The form continues a line of organic design at Georg Jensen that runs back to the bowls Henning Koppel created for the house in the mid twentieth century. The raised foot lifts the bowl off the surface, so light moves across the steel as you walk past.
The polished finish reflects its surroundings, picking up the colours of the table, the timber and the light around it. In a bright room it holds window light, and in the evening it catches candles.
Use it for fruit, bread rolls or nuts, or leave it empty as an object. Beside teak, the cool steel and warm timber make a good pairing.
To clean, wash by hand in warm water with mild soap and dry with a soft cloth. We recommend against the dishwasher, to protect the polish.
Excellent vintage condition, with the maker's mark clear on the base. Dimensions: 27.8 cm L x 20.6 cm W x 10.3 cm H. Weight: 689 g. The photos include close views of the base marking and polished surface.
