This impressive two-piece Japanese shop storage chest, known as a Chōba-dansu, dates to the Meiji period (late 19th century) and exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of merchant-class cabinetry. Constructed using a harmonious combination of zelkova wood panels, paulownia interior, and a cypress façade, this chest strikes a beautiful balance between structural integrity and aesthetic elegance.

The chest features copper hardware—a detail that adds a warm, subtle contrast to the wood tones while reflecting the meticulous metalwork of the period. The two-piece design offers flexibility in display and use, allowing it to be stacked as a tall storage unit or separated for a lower, more elongated configuration.

Originally used by merchants to store valuable items such as account books, textiles, and shop tools, this chest is both a functional storage solution and a decorative statement piece. Its clean lines and natural materials give it a timeless appeal, making it equally suited to traditional or modern interiors.
