Background:
Torbjørn Afdal (1917–1999) was one of Norway’s most influential postwar furniture designers, celebrated for his refined material sensibility and minimalist forms. After graduating from the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in 1946, he became the lead designer at Bruksbo Tegnekontor, where he created iconic pieces like the Hunter Chair and Krobo Bench. Afdal’s work, often crafted in teak, rosewood, leather, and steel, was admired internationally — with clients including Jacqueline Kennedy and the Japanese Emperor. His designs reflect the Scandinavian tradition of clean lines and functional elegance, earning him a lasting legacy in modernist design history.
Condition:
The frame has been fully disassembled, reglued, and structurally rebuilt to ensure long-term integrity. It has been stripped, sanded, and refinished with Danish oil, enhancing the timber’s grain and tone. The cord has been replaced for durability and visual consistency. The leather seat has been cleaned, conditioned, and sympathetically recoloured to enrich its character and presentation.
