Details

Hornsea Pottery Contrast is one of Hornsea's more striking designs. It was in production from 1974 to 1992 and was their most successful range selling across the world. In fact it was so well thought of that in 1976 the Victoria and Albert Museum added it to their permanent collection in London.

Contrast was developed for production at Hornsea’s new factory in Lancaster. The design emphasised the chocolate brown ‘Vitramic’ body created by Colin Rawson, the clay being vitrified in a high-temperature firing and polished to pebble-like smoothness. The polishing was achieved by vibrating the pieces in containers loaded with ceramic pellets. The range won a Design Council Award in 1975.
