The peacock in this tapestry was drawn by Philip Webb and set by William Morris among swirling acanthus leaves, as one part of The Forest, a large tapestry commissioned by Alexander Ionides in 1887. Morris & Co wove the original at Merton Abbey in Surrey, and it is now held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The full tapestry also includes a lion, a fox, a rabbit and a raven, with John Henry Dearle adding the foreground details.
This reproduction was woven in France by Goblys on a jacquard loom, the technique that allows fine, shaded detail across a whole pattern. Look closely and you can see it in the peacock's plumage, where the tail feathers are worked in green, gold and terracotta against a deep navy ground, and in the slate blue leaves that fill the space around him.
A cord loop at the top allows it to hang from a single nail or hook, and the tapestry is lined. The soft blues and greens sit well beside teak and other warm timbers, which makes it a natural companion for a mid century sideboard or a stairwell wall. It also suits a hallway or bedroom wall, and the muted palette works with both pale walls and dark ones.
It is a reproduction rather than an original Morris & Co textile, and the photos show its colour and weave in detail. Dimensions: 110 cm H x 70 cm W.
