A French Empire Revival guéridon or occasional table, dating to the first quarter of the 20th century.The circular top is formed from dark green, white-veined marble, probably an Italian Verde Alpi-type marble, set above a restrained walnut frieze. The table is raised on four tapering legs decorated with gilt-metal female-mask mounts, pendant palmettes and paw-form feet.The Egyptianesque character of the masks and stylised ornament reflects the decorative vocabulary introduced into French design following Napoleon’s Egyptian expedition of 1798–1801. Egyptian, Greek and Roman motifs were subsequently absorbed into the French Empire style and remained influential during its later revival during the Third Republic.A well-proportioned and useful guéridon, suitable as a lamp table, side table or occasional table.Origin: FranceDate: c.1910–1930Style: EmpireDimensions: 61.5cm tall and 60cm diameter.
