Details
This large antique coffee table is a piece of Melbourne history, said to have originated from the former Foy & Gibson factories in Collingwood, built in 1887, where retail goods were produced, imported, and sold in Melbourne's first department store. Around 1895, Foy & Gibson began manufacturing textiles, clothing, furniture, and hardware. By the early 1920s, the large 'Gibsonia' woolen and hosiery mills were established on Oxford Street, and it is said that this coffee table, made of hardwood timber and mounted on four cast iron wheels, originated from there. It was originally used to sort and transport large quantities of scored wool, ready for carding.
