Description: Displaying impressive flame mahogany drawer fronts and bold turned columns, this antique English chest of drawers combines fine cabinetmaking with clever concealed storage. Retaining its original mahogany handles, brass escutcheons and key, the chest presents beautifully with rich timber grain across the drawer fronts.
At first glance, the piece appears to be a traditional six-drawer chest. However, it conceals two secret drawers, making it an eight-drawer chest in reality. One hidden drawer is located behind the scroll column drawer above the main drawer arrangement, while a second concealed drawer is within the chest's skirt.
The drawer configuration comprises a central hat drawer flanked by two narrower drawers, with three full-width drawers of graduating heights below. This thoughtful arrangement provides a combination of practical storage and visual balance.
The quality of the dovetail construction is particularly noteworthy and reflects the standard of workmanship associated with fine English furniture of the period.
