Meet the Ella’s, a couple of rare, extra large 1950s wingback chairs in need of restoration and a new forever home (or two).

The wingback chair is a classic shape and gets its name from the wings that curve out on both sides. The shape of ‘wings’ vary depending on origin. The curved wings are thought to be more European, while the straight ones are thought to be more American.

The wingback was invented in the 17th century by English furniture designer by Thomas Chippendale. The wings of the chair were made to support the head and neck of the person sitting, and they are known to be great nursing chairs for mothers. Originally designed to be used in front of a fireplace, the wings provided climate control in preventing drafts as well.

Wingbacks are designed for comfort and make the perfect reading chair as it provides excellent support. This type of chair also lends itself perfectly for contrasting fabrics without becoming too loud. While reproductions are relatively easy to find these days, older ones like these are hard to come by.
