The story behind Danish furniture maker Fredericia Furniture dates back to 1911 when N. P. Ravnsø founded the company in an industrial port town of the same name (Fredericia). Fredericia was also the town where the era's largest Scandinavian design fair (the Nordic International Furniture Exhibition) was held a year earlier. Fredericia (both the town and the company) continued to host the fair until 1983.
Ravnsø wanted to built his company reputation on quality and only hired the most skilled craftsmen he could find. The Fredericia Furniture's early collections in the 1920s reflected the influence of English and Central European designs. In 1934, Thonet made an exclusive licensing agreement with Fredericia Furniture for the Scandinavian region. This agreement turned out to be valuable for the company and they had to doubled its production staff to meet the high demand. However, when Germany occupied Denmark during the Second World War, it became difficult to obtain raw materials and Fredericia Furniture struggled to survive. At the end of the war, and years after, the company nearly went bankrupt.
In 1955, Ravnsø sold Fredericia Furniture to Andreas Graversen, an interior architect involved with Danish consumer's co-operative (also known as FDB). Graversens brought in the FDB's studio manager, Børge Mogensen as head of design. The Borge Mogensen chair model 2256 was designed during these years.
Mogensen stayed with Fredericia Furniture until he died in 1972. In 1980, Fredericia acquired the license for a number of Mogensen's designs from Lauritzen & Son. The reason for this was to consolidate as many as Mogensen's designs under one brand.
In 1989, Fredericia Furniture acquired production rights for a range of Hans J Wegner furniture previously manufactured by the Johannes Hansen. The Borge Mogensen chair model 2256 is no longer in production.
