About this piece
Genuine antique Anglo-Indian four-panel folding screen, crafted in solid padouk, a dense hardwood, with intricate brass inlay. Designed to function as a room divider or to be mounted as a flat wall panel. All decorative work is repeated on the reverse, making the screen fully double-sided.
Each of the four hinged panels is constructed within a jointed frame. The upper crest of each panel features a pierced floral motif, with carved finials to the tops of the uprights. The upper and lower horizontal framed panels are executed in geometric ‘Pinjara’ (birdcage) openwork, while the larger vertical panels are profusely inlaid with brass in botanical floral and foliate motifs. Between the lower legs, Moorish arches create an arcaded effect across the run of panels. The frame carries full geometric edge carving, with a brass inlay at each intersection.
The piece reflects influences from two northern Indian centres: Hoshiarpur, noted for intricate inlay, and Simla, associated with Pinjara carving. An almost identical screen is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and is referenced in Furniture from British India and Ceylon by Amin Jaffes (pages 308–309).
Condition: Complete and in excellent original condition for its age.
