About this piece
Circular centre or occasional table from the English Victorian period, mid-1800s, in rosewood. The timber—historically imported from Central and South America—has mellowed from its original dark tone to a honeyed colour with contrasting dark figuring.
The top presents a central circular ebonised panel with parquetry floral inlays, echoed by an outer complementary band with more stylised flowing flowers, foliage, shell and horn-of-plenty motifs. The recessed apron is vertical with an undulating lower edge and well-turned inverted finials at the shallow points.
The support structure comprises a bold central barley twist column rising from a small quadruped platform base. This is anchored by four finer barley twist columns that rise from a larger, flat quadruped base with four flattened bun feet, which retain the original all-brass castor assemblies beneath. Additional embellishments include raised turned patera above the bun feet and turned finials above the four lower barley twist supports.
Dimensions: 93 cm W x 74 cm H. Note: The listing also cites 91 cm W x 74 cm H.
Condition: Untouched original aged condition. There is a shrinkage gap on the top—typical of timber movement across the grain—which a professional restorer can rectify as a standard procedure. The table would benefit from a clean-up and general refurbishment. Seller notes it will present strongly once professionally detailed and refurbished.
