Antique English Georgian Regency period 1811 to 1820 Mahogany Sofa Table

This is a very nice example of a genuine antique English Georgian period Regency period 1811 to 1820 Sofa Table. So named as homes with large rooms with free standing settees / lounges / Sofas often had a Sofa Table behind them to accommodate lamps or candelabras and clocks etc. They also doubled as a writing Table and could also just be used as a Side Table. These tables were finished all round as they often were accessed and viewed from both sides.

This one is rectangular in form with drop down flaps / leaves with rounded corners at either end which could be raised and supported by concealed ‘gate leg’ hinged brackets.

The frieze section is also rectangular and has a pair of side by side flush mounted drawers with perimeter Rosewood cross banding and each with pairs of turned drawer pull knobs. The rear of the frieze section is finished the same except the drawers are faux.

At each end are lovely and unusually shaped trestle supports comprising of a pair of squared uprights with a lowercross member and brass rods forming a stylised classical Lyre. The cross member is further embellished with a raised ebonised diamond shape with a circular patera within.

The uprights them selves have a central full height Rosewood cross banding with fine Ebony line inlays to compliment the cross banded drawers. the uprights at the lower end curve to form the feet which have beneath them the original all brass castor assemblies.

The table is made from and finished in well figured and now slightly mellow coloured prestigious imported Central American Mahogany.

Condition: Excellent for age and desirably in near original condition. Photographed as it arrived so it will clean and wax up nicely before it goes out.

Sellers Observation: This is a lovely table however you use it. On aprestigious international online selling site a fixed top table with an identical base was claimed to be by the famous maker Gillows and was priced many times higher than this table which is a far better table. I am making no such claim however it is a very lovely table.
