About this piece

Provincial Chinese painted coffer dating to the Middle Qing Dynasty, early 18th century. Constructed in elm, the case retains painted surfaces and drawers carved in deep relief with floral motifs, including chrysanthemums and peonies. The form pairs utilitarian storage with decorative detail.

Traditionally used for linens, garments and household belongings. Surviving surfaces display a rich patina consistent with age and use.
