A Large French Louis-Philippe Period Giltwood and Gesso Overmantel Mirror
Of characteristic Louis-Philippe form, the substantial rectangular mirror plate with rounded upper corners set within a giltwood and gesso frame of elegant restrained profile.
The broad flat surround enriched along its inner edge with a finely cast continuous rope-twist or bead-and-reel moulding, a hallmark of the period's refined decorative vocabulary.
The outer border further articulated with a reeded slip, the whole raised on a plain plinth base.
The gilding of warm honey-gold tone throughout, with the natural attrition of age lending a pleasing variation of surface — areas of gilding gently worn to reveal the underlying gesso and bole, entirely consistent with a piece of this date and desirable in the current market.
The mirror plate appearing original or very early, exhibiting characteristic foxing.
The rounded upper corners — a defining trait of the Louis-Philippe aesthetic — distinguish this example from earlier Empire severity and later Napoleon III exuberance, placing it firmly within the most collectible phase of French 19th-century decorative arts.
