A French Louis XVI Style Kingwood and Marquetry Bureau Desk

A substantial French pedestal bureau in the Louis XVI taste, extensively veneered in kingwood and contrasting timbers with geometric parquetry, fine stringing and banded decoration throughout.The broad writing surface is centred by a large floral marquetry medallion beneath a raised three-drawer superstructure, surmounted by a brecciated marble slab and pierced brass gallery. The twin pedestals contain an extensive arrangement of drawers fitted with brass wreath-form ring handles and escutcheons, raised on square tapering feet.The decorative scheme continues across both sides and the entire rear elevation, with large radiating parquetry panels and matching geometric borders, indicating that the bureau was conceived as a fully freestanding piece. The writing surface opens to reveal an aged leather-lined interior with small drawers and compartments. A concealed iron locking mechanism within the carcass secures the drawer banks when the writing surface is closed. No key is present.In good antique condition with age-related cracking, shrinkage and scattered minor losses to the veneers, together with surface marks and wear consistent with age and use.
