A German Biedermeier commode in richly figured cherrywood dating to the first quarter of the 19th century.Of particularly restrained form, the commode is arranged with two broad drawers beneath a slightly overhanging rectangular top, raised on long square tapering legs. The unadorned façade is characteristic of early Biedermeier cabinetmaking, relying almost entirely upon the colour and figuring of the timber for decoration. Each drawer retains a small ebonised shield-shaped escutcheon, providing a restrained contrast to the warm timber.The commode retains a pleasing old surface with the expected marks, scratches, small veneer losses and variations in colour associated with age and use.
