19th century, Circa 1860, Hall or Over-mantle mirror. Aged gold-leaf gilding on gesso & timber scalloped frame with C- scrolls & trailing foliage. Triple original mirror plates. Highly decorative naturally aged glass, frame with no losses & original gilded finish. Some retouching to gilded finish. Also some earlier breaks to frame, but now in excellent structurally sound condition. Original timber panelled back-boards. Over-mantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian, Regency and Victorian homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive, but not overpowering fashion. However this mirror would also sit beautifully in any hallway, entrance or dining space within the modern home.
