Vico Magistretti “Veranda” Sofa for Cassina, Italy, 1980s – Original Red Wool Upholstery
An iconic piece of Italian postmodern design, this original Veranda sofa was designed by renowned Italian architect and designer Vico Magistretti for Cassina in 1983. A celebrated example of Magistretti’s innovative approach to comfort and transformable furniture, the Veranda remains one of the most distinctive and sought-after sofa designs of the 1980s.
Inspired by the concept of a “veranda” as a space between indoors and outdoors, Magistretti designed the sofa to encourage multiple ways of sitting, lounging and reclining. The Veranda features independently adjustable seating elements with folding backrests that transform into headrests, allowing the sofa to shift effortlessly between upright seating and relaxed lounging positions.
This example retains its original red felted wool upholstery, a richly textured fabric that beautifully reflects the bold character of 1980s Italian design. The sofa’s mechanical elements have been professionally refurbished and operate smoothly, preserving the functionality that made the Veranda a design landmark.

Design Story
Founded in 1927 in Meda by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, the company originally produced handcrafted wooden furniture before evolving into a pioneer of industrial design in postwar Italy. As modern architecture began reshaping Europe, Cassina became one of the first companies to bridge artisanal tradition with large scale modern production.
The company gained international recognition through collaborations with legendary architects and designers including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand. Their furniture designs, particularly the LC4 Chaise Longue and the LC2 Chair, became defining symbols of modernist interiors.
Unlike many furniture brands focused purely on decoration, Cassina approached furniture as part of a broader architectural vision. Its pieces emphasized proportion, innovation, and material quality while maintaining the elegance and refinement associated with Italian craftsmanship.
Over the decades, Cassina also became known for preserving design history through its meticulous production of modernist classics alongside collaborations with contemporary designers. This balance between heritage and innovation helped establish the company as a cornerstone of global design culture.
Today, Cassina furniture is found in luxury homes, galleries, and architect designed interiors around the world. Its legacy reflects the enduring influence of Italian modernism: sophisticated, intellectual, and timeless.
