A banzuke is the official listing of Sumo ranks prior to a tournament. Written in Sumo Moji, a specific Japanese writing style used only for sumo wrestlers, banzuke are typically produced on paper. On special occasions, banzuke are hand painted on timber, as presented here. Our banzuke is from 1967. The structure of the ranking is very formal and reads from the top right corner across and down. The highest rank in Sumo is the Yokozuna. The Yokozuna in 1967 was Sadanoyamam Shinmatsu, the 50th Yokozuna. A formidable wrestler, Sadanoyama, reigned from 1965 - 1968. His last bout was against Hawaiian born Sumo Takamiyama. Sadanoyama's loss to the Hawaiian, has been attributed to his shock retirement shortly after. Beyond wrestling, Sadanoyama became the head of the Dewanoumi Sumo stable and eventually the Head of the Japan Sumo Association.

An highly interesting and rare piece. The banzuke is not just for a Sumo enthusiasts. The eye catching artistry of the hand painted characters, the story and aesthetic allure of the piece makes it suitable for a wide array of settings and styles.
