Late nineteenth-century copy or print of The Vigil, after the 1884 oil painting by Scottish artist John Pettie (1839–1893). The composition shows a young squire kneeling in prayer, grasping the cross-shaped hilt of his sword, observing the traditional nightlong vigil before a medieval knighting ceremony. The original painting, exhibited in 1884 and now in the Tate Britain collection (115.8 cm x 170.3 cm), features a medieval chapel interior modelled on St Bartholomew's Church in Smithfield.
