About this piece
Slag glass takes its name from the byproducts of metal smelting (“slag”) once used in its creation. When metal oxides are added to molten glass, the result is a marbled appearance with natural swirls and veining; each shade shows its own variation. These lamps were especially popular from the late 19th to early 20th century for the way ornate cast-metal frames paired with richly coloured glass to produce a jewel-like glow.
One panel shows a carefully repaired crack that blends into the glass’s marbling. When illuminated, the shade presents a warm, diffuse light.
