About this piece

An 18th century engraved book plate from George Edwards and Matthias Darly’s A New Book of Chinese Designs, Calculated to Improve the Present Taste, published in London in 1754.

Plate 27 depicts two fanciful designs for candelabra in the fashionable Chinese taste, combining pagoda architecture, figures, foliage and ornamental supports. The publication belongs to the flourishing taste for chinoiserie in mid-18th century Britain and is closely associated with the decorative vocabulary that also informed contemporary furniture and interior design.

Presented beneath a wide cream mount in a slender gilt frame. The paper has mellowed with age and retains scattered foxing and tonal variation consistent with its period, contributing to the character of the sheet.
