Details

Two-part George III secretaire bookcase, circa 1810, crafted in fine mahogany with exotic decorative timbers. The stepped cornice with dentil frieze frames a cavetto-shaped pediment. Twin glazed doors feature a mix of Gothic and Romanesque glazing bars. The lower cabinet presents as five full-width graduated drawers; the top two faux fronts pull out to reveal a secretaire with a finely fitted interior. The whole stands on straight bracket feet. Doors are feather (cross) banded and drawers are semi-crossbanded in an exotic rosewood. All glass is original, as are the keys.

Stamped W.F. to the interior of the upper cabinet, the piece fits the timeline and is directly attributable to William France Jnr. (1759–1838). William France Snr. worked with Thomas Chippendale. William France Jnr., as did his uncle (William France senior), held the Royal Warrant as Cabinetmaker, Upholsterer and Undertaker to King George III, the Prince Regent and King George IV. His work is closely held and appears in notable Royal and aristocratic settings including Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace (then Buckingham House), Carlton House, Kensington Palace, St. James’s Palace, the Brighton Pavilion, the Military Chapel at White Hall, Hatfield House, Badminton House, Cranbourne Lodge and the Duke of Wellington’s Strathfield House. He produced furniture for high-society clients and worked with architect and designer Robert Adam, and was charged with organising and overseeing the funeral of Lord Horacio Nelson, supervising construction of his carved sarcophagus with its 10,000 gilt nails.

Condition: In original, aged and untouched condition commensurate with age and use, having come from a long established historical, Colonial rural estate. The piece requires conservation. Professional, museum-quality conservation can be arranged to maintain the integrity of the work.
