Details
Early Victorian English card table dating to c. 1845–1850, crafted in solid walnut. The rectangular fold-over top with rounded front corners is veneered in selected, highly figured honey-coloured walnut burl, book-matched to form a symmetrical pattern. The top lifts and swivels to rest on the apron, which incorporates a concealed storage compartment; when opened, it reveals a baize-lined inset playing surface.
The apron is detailed with a lower moulding and a central decorative carving in the French manner. The table stands on a turned and boldly carved column over a cylindrical base, from which extend four shaped, carved, and tapered cabriole legs with foliate-carved knees, scrolled feet, and carved toes. Original all-brass castor assemblies are retained.
Condition: Excellent for age. The original baize fabric is worn.
