About this piece

Set of six early Victorian English dining chairs, circa 1845, crafted as “show timber” frames in imported Central American mahogany. The design reflects the period’s transition from earlier rail backs to the emerging balloon back form, with a distinct French influence evident in both profile and carved ornament.

Seat rails are curved at the sides and serpentine to the front, all well profiled. The top rail carries boldly carved, raised foliate motifs to each shoulder, while the serpentine waist rail features a pronounced central carved detail. Front legs are highly profiled, boldly turned and tapered, with well-carved tulip motifs at the tops.

Condition: Chair frames are structurally sound and retain their original polish, presenting an excellent patina. Seats are webbed and padded and would benefit from attention.
