Early Victorian English card and games table, 1850s, in figured walnut with a fold-over, swivel top and integrated storage.
The rectangular top features a stepped and curved perimeter moulding. It swivels and folds over the rectangular frieze, opening to reveal a circular woven-fabric playing surface. The frieze incorporates a storage compartment for cards and game pieces, and is finished with a complementary raised moulding showing French-influenced Louis XV style C- and S-scrolls with intermittent stylised shell carvings.
A boldly profiled solid walnut centre support presents a carved tulip above a large bulbous turning. Below, a small upright cylindrical base with raised upper and lower mouldings issues four outward- and downward-swept cabriole legs, each with foliage-carved knees and carved feet, set on the original all-brass castor assemblies.
This versatile form also suits use as a hall or side table, including bedside placement.
