Details
English Early Victorian card table in solid, well‑figured mahogany, circa 1845, of rectangular form with a swivel and fold‑over, baize‑lined top; stamped internally by cabinetmaker James Winter, 101 Wardour Street, London.
The rectangular top swivels and folds to reveal the internally baize‑lined playing surface and rests on the rectangular frieze storage section. The vertical frieze front is flat with a serpentine lower edge and applied raised carved C‑ and S‑scroll mouldings in the French Louis XV manner, while the overall composition shows French Louis XVI influence. The frieze incorporates storage for cards and other games.
A boldly turned solid mahogany centre column terminates in a small lower cylinder from which four carved, flowing cabriole legs extend, embellished at the knees and feet, and finishing in carved and scrolled feet. The table retains its original all‑brass castor assembly beneath the feet. The mahogany is noted as being imported from Central America, with a nicely coloured, well‑figured surface.
Provenance: Stamped internally by James Winter, 101 Wardour Street, London.
Condition: Desirably, virtually original condition.
Dimensions:
- Closed: 92 cm W x 45 cm D x 73 cm H
- Opened: 91 cm D
