Pair of novelty Japanese shakudo plaque cufflinks set in 14 karat yellow gold. The central plaques are likely repurposed components dating to the tail end of the 19th or early 20th century, later fashioned into cufflinks with 14K yellow gold settings, likely during the 1970s.
Shakudo is a Japanese copper–gold alloy noted for its darkened blue patina, widely employed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Western jewellers of the period often incorporated shakudo elements into brooches, earrings and bracelets; this pair continues that practice through later conversion.
Each cufflink is fitted with a sprung mechanism that is working well and secures cleanly. The later mechanism is marked 14K for gold purity.
