Details
Imperial Period silver-gilt and bowenite inkwell by Fabergé, dating to 1908–1917, the final years of the Romanov reign. The bowenite body is mounted with chased laurel leaves and acanthus swags, and fitted with a hinged cover topped by a ribbon-tied acanthus wreath finial. The inkwell stands on four silver winged-paw feet and retains its original glass liner to protect the stone from ink pigments.
Fabergé, established in 1842 by Gustav Fabergé and renowned as court jeweller to the Russian Imperial family, produced objets d’art alongside jewellery, including hardstone desk accessories such as inkwells and seals.
Marks:
- To the top of the inkwell: Moscow 84 Kokoshnik mark
- К.ФАБЕРЖЕ in Cyrillic for Carl Fabergé directly beneath the imperial warrant mark
- Two further identical marks, slightly rubbed and illegible
Dimensions:
- 8.5 cm H x 6.25 cm D
Condition:
- Presents very well for age
- Bowenite with some natural fissures to one area; stable and likely present since manufacture
- Original glass liner in good condition with no chips or cracks
- Evidence of historical restorations to the underside, with a couple of the winged-paw feet appearing to have been re-soldered
- Lightly polished to retain natural surface patina
Provenance:
- Christie’s, New York, 14 April 1994, lot 126
- Bonhams, London, “The Russian Sale,” 2 December 2015, lot 92
