Late 17th-century French tapestry depicting the myth of Callisto and Artemis, aligned with the period’s sustained interest in classical subjects. In 17th- and 18th-century France—particularly during the reign of Louis XIV—mythological narratives were frequently chosen for prestigious woven decorations, reflecting courtly promotion of classical ideals.
The scene relates the tale of Callisto, a nymph and companion of Artemis, bound by vows of chastity. Zeus, disguised as Artemis, deceived Callisto, and she became pregnant. Upon discovery, Callisto was transformed into a bear. Years later, her son Arcas nearly killed her while hunting, not recognising her. To preserve them, Zeus placed both in the heavens as constellations: Callisto as Ursa Major (the Great Bear) and Arcas as Ursa Minor (the Little Bear).
A narrow border indicates the tapestry was originally designed to be fixed within wooden panelling. Repairs have been undertaken over time; the textile is structurally strong and presents well. It can be hung with hooks or Velcro. Sourced in Paris.
