About this piece
Norwegian peasant armchair (karmstol), handcrafted in the 1800s within the rural Bondemøbler tradition. A functional form articulated with carved detail and polychrome accents.
- Hand-carved, crested backrest with vertical slat detailing
- Gracefully curved armrests terminating in rounded grips
- Turned legs and back spindles with traditional ring-painted banding in deep red and forest green/black
- Original-style natural-fibre seat, rewoven in papercord; in great condition
- Wood with a warm, developed patina from age and use
Historical note:
In Norwegian farmhouses, chairs of this type were often among the most valued items of furniture, sometimes reserved for the head of the household or honoured guests. The ring-painting technique provided colour and a sense of status without the expense of full rosemaling.
