English William IV two-tier side cabinet, 1830–1837, crafted in imported Central American Brazilian rosewood with notable figure and a warm honey tone.
The upper display cabinet comprises a pair of square glazed doors opening to three full-width adjustable shelves. The interior is polished and fitted with a mirrored back, creating an “illusionist” display that reflects objects so they can be viewed from the rear as well as the front. Engaged flat pilasters flank the doors, each applied with carved French S-shaped scrolls. Above sits a three-sided spindle gallery with finely turned spindles.
The lower storage cabinet features a protruding frieze with a concave edge moulding and a bold decorative “centurians skirt”. Set below are a pair of recessed, glazed arched-panel doors. Free-standing, opposed full-height turned barley-twist columns frame the doors, with intricately carved petal-motif capitals and bases. The cupboard includes a full-width shelf with an applied edge moulding. The whole is raised on a protruding plinth base.
Condition: Near excellent with only minor faults. One lower door has a replaced mirror panel; the other retains the original mirror with foxing. If replaced, both doors would present uniformly. Complete with the original key.
